Life From A Christian Perspective

Judge Neil Gorsuch. What is his true ideology?

Republicans will need 60 votes to get Gorsuch confirmed. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said he would join with other Democrats in attempting to filibuster the nomination. The GOO will now be forced to implement the nuclear option, a precedent the Democrats established by voting to end the filibuster, using it to appoint lower court judges, and by doing so, stacking the courts with liberal justices.

The fact that Schumer now claims that the GOP should keep the Supreme Court filibuster and just get a more liberal nominee, is beyond partisan politics. The standard Schumer wants implemented is not one of qualifications, but one of issue advocacy. He does not believe Gorsuch will side with the Democrats on issues if confirmed to SCOTUS and clearly does not want an independent judiciary. What he is revealing in essence, is that Democrats will never approve a Constitutional scholar.

They want a liberal on the highest court of the land, period, which is confirmed by their latest political maneuvering. These hearings are not even completed yet and the Democrats have decided that the man they unanimously appointed to a lower court ten years ago, is not qualified to be SCOTUS, when the American Bar Assosciation gave him the highest possible rating just about two week ago.

We all know we have a far left mainstream media in this country. Let’s look at the press coverage of Gorsuch.

CNN’s John King: “The democrats have not even bruised, blemished anything to this judge so far.”

CNN’s Gloria Borger: “Judge Gorsuch is completely qualified and everybody knows it. He is totally and completely qualified and he’s exactly the kind of a nominee you would expect from a Republican, period. This is what elections are about.”

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer: “I think he did a great job this morning. I think the Democrats have done a pretty poor job, but I think the reason they have done a poor job is there’s not a lot to beat this man up on.”

MSNBC’s Ari Melber: “I didn’t see a single glove laid on him. He performed himself admirably.”

And lastly, this one really stands out, Jeffrey Toobin: “He knows so much more about everything he’s being asked than the senators. And a couple of times it really came back to bite them.”

This is the American press corps making these statements. Schemer and the Democrats seem to be at a odds with their media arm. This coverage in itself, gives me pause. Clearly, Gorsuch has not done or said anything to disqualify himself during these hearings, but he did state that Roe v Wade is the law of the land. Just on that statement alone, Republicans should immediately question this man’s conservative stance. Democrats should rejoice about it. One could argue that he would not reveal his hand if he planned to be a strong pro-life proponent, if he wanted to get confirmed. One could only speculate.

He is a staunch Constitutionalist and believer in religious freedom. In this regard his body of work speaks for itself. He ruled and wrote many opinions that the government should rarely, if ever, coerce the consciences of believers. But that’s only one facet of a wide array of legal issues. Many conservative journalists have raised concerns and have stated that they are very skeptical that he is truly a conservative and the right appointment to SCOTUS. Let’s look at the facts.

He was raised Catholic but he, along with his wife and two daughters, have been members of the St. John’s Episcopal Church in Boulder, Colorado for years. Like the city, the congregation is extremely liberal. It bars guns from its campus, condemns harsh criticism of Islam and is for green energy. This specific congregation performed same-sex “commitment ceremonies” since the 1980s and are now performing same-sex marriages. Obviously Gorsuch is constantly hearing a very liberal point of view. I couldn’t sit through that every Sunday. Could you as a staunch conservative and Christian adhering to The Bible in its entirety?

It’s female rector, Rev. Susan Springer, attended the Women’s March (not the March for Life) in Denver this year, though, according to her office, that fact: “was not a form of protest, but a sign of support for the dignity of every human being.” Would anyone you know, who calls themselves a true conservative, go to such a church as this Sunday after Sunday? I personally don’t know anyone. At all. A cause for pause indeed.

You see, once on the Supreme Court, justices can go on their own path. Some turn out to be of complete opposite political ideology as initially indicated, and judges with slim records, like Judge Gorsuch, are not easy to predict. That being said, from a legal perspective, he adheres to the literal interpretation of the rule of law according to its text and believes the Constitution to be followed in every aspect and regard.

Judge Gorsuch does not fit the mold of a rock solid conservative, though he certainly has some conservative credentials. He is a lifelong Republican (which honestly does not say much in the current political climate) and he is a member of the Federalist Society, a leading conservative legal organization.

He openly admires the late Antonin Scalia, the justice he would replace, a true hero to conservative intellectuals. There is no doubt that Judge Gorsuch is an intellectual giant, enormously intelligent, free-thinking and independent. From his hearings, it seems that he would be fair, yet certainly an unpredictable justice. One can only hope that he will judge righteously, and not contrary to God’s Word.
