Can a Conservative be Pro-Choice?
The Blaze fired Tomi Lahren for changing her position on abortion. Claiming to be a conservative, Lahren had always pro-life and defended the unborn on her platform, including on her social media accounts, until just recently. Unfortunately she was faced with her first secular mainstream media exposure and it certainly seems like she failed the test miserably.
She used to be a staunch “pro-life” advocate in her Facebook posts and videos, as well as her Twitter posts, but for some reason, she made a one-eighty when she appeared on the über liberal, “The View.” Did she give in to the pressure to please the liberal-progressive crowd? It seems so.
A somewhat plausible interpretation might be that Tomi turned sold-out libertarian and really changed her mind on the grounds of “freedom”, but why she decided to blindside her followers and conservatives on “The View” of all places, is mind boggling. She betrayed true conservatism on the most liberal national television show out there, and it did not go unnoticed. The fact remains, true conservatism could never, ever support the murder of innocent babies. Ever.
She has been very vocal about being a “victim” on Twitter following this incident, stating that she’s under attack from “the conservative police,” and that she’s a “moderate conservative.” It’s the first time I’ve ever heard that term: “moderate conservative.” The first thing that came to mind, was a brown emoji my boy loves.
What is even more telling, is that she doesn’t seem to mind the damage caused to a truly moral movement by appointing herself as spokeswoman to all things conservative, and then publicly turning her back on the most fundamental moral cause of the movement, while demeaning the conservatives who still believe in that moral principal.
It is troubling. Her change of heart is suspicious to say the least. How does one call abortion “a baby being murdered”, and then turn around and say she will: “do what she wants with her body?” There’s no gray area with abortion. You can’t be a “moderate” on abortion. You either believe that a woman has the right to kill her offspring in her womb, and to choose her own convenience over another human being’s very existence, or you don’t. That’s it.
When one reverses course so drastically in this manner and refuse to offer an explanation, whilst demeaning the followers who are expecting one, you can’t cry when the followers make up their own minds concerning the facts that are at hand. She became an embodiment of a “conservative” hypocrite, which is sad, because she had some relevant influence in the battle over morality in today’s culture.
What makes it even more disheartening, is that she chose the one issue that is honestly non-debatable with conservatives. She has lost us. Claiming the “Constitution” is extremely disingenuous. There is definitely nothing in the Constitution granting a woman the right to murder her child, and she knows it. There are, however, several amendments which affirm the right to life…
Claiming abortion is “a decision made by the woman”, is categorically false as well. A woman does not murder her own body when she allows an abortion, she allows an innocent, separate human being’s body (that she is supposed to love, nurture and protect,) to be exterminated.
A woman claiming she can “do what she wants with her body”, is living outside the realm of human responsibility. I can certainly have the right to bear arms, but I lose that right when I murder an innocent human being through the exercise of that right. The same can be said for every basic right. There are limits and boundaries in responsibility. We may have a right to “do what we want,” but we know that there are boundaries morally and legally to not cause an innocent party any harm. But for some reason, murdering the most innocent we’re called to protect and love, does not carry any responsibility whatsoever.
A conservative that claims they’re pro-choice, is not a conservative. Period. It reminds me of the verse: a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
“For You did form my inward parts; You did knit me together in my mother’s womb.”
– Psalm 139:13 AMPC
There’s no such thing as a pro-choice conservative. There’s no such thing as a pro-choice Christian. They who make that claim, are either utterly misinformed or hypocritical, immoral liars, but those are the two choices.
Tomi, which one is it?
